What you get
Full Kit — $40
Certified harness, helmet and via ferrata lanyard. Everything the route requires apart from sturdy shoes. Helmets come in M/L and S/M.
Lanyard Only — $25
For climbers who already own a harness and helmet. A via ferrata lanyard has an energy absorber built in — a climbing sling is not a substitute.
Rates are for 1–2 days, plus Utah sales tax at the rate for your pickup town — shown before you pay. Longer rentals add $5 per day from day three, capped at day five. Group discounts for five or more.
Before you climb
Uintah County requires its own waiver
Separate from ours, and every climber must carry proof of it on the route. The county classifies rule violations as a class B misdemeanour. There is no cell service at the trailhead, so sort it before you set off.
Vernal gear rental FAQ
Can I rent via ferrata gear in Vernal?
Yes. We keep full kits and lanyards in a secure shed in Vernal, close to the Uintah Community Center and a short drive from Ashley Gorge. Book online and the exact address plus a door code are emailed to you.
How far is it from the gorge?
It is in town, so you can collect gear the morning of your climb instead of hauling it from the Wasatch Front. If you are driving out from Salt Lake or Provo, we also have a pickup in Orem right by Provo Canyon — pick whichever fits your route when you book.
What is in a full kit?
A certified harness, a helmet, and a via ferrata lanyard with an energy absorber. That is everything the route requires beyond sturdy shoes. Gloves are recommended and we keep pairs at the Vernal shed.
What if I already have a harness and helmet?
Rent a lanyard on its own for $25. A via ferrata lanyard is the one piece climbers most often do not own — a standard climbing sling is not a substitute and Uintah County rules prohibit improvised connections.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes, and it is set by the equipment manufacturer, not by us: 90 to 265 lbs. Uintah County also requires a minimum reach of 62 inches from the ground. Climbers outside the weight range must use a professional guide with a supplemental belay.
When is the via ferrata open?
March 1 through November 30, during daylight hours, weather permitting. Per Uintah County the route closes when it is raining or snowing, and anyone on it should move to the nearest exit point.
Climbing Ashley Gorge?
Reserve a kit in Vernal and collect it on your way to the trailhead. Or grab one in Orem if you are driving out through Provo Canyon — choose either when you book.
